Gender Impact Assessment Tool
This year, LatStudios developed a tailored Gender Impact Assessment (GIA) Tool, uniting teams from our Brisbane and Melbourne studios to understand how we can embed gender equity into our practice and create more inclusive communities.
City planning and design often reflects historical gender biases, with designs that can feel less safe, accessible, and inclusive for diverse identities. Gender-sensitive design challenges these biases, fostering public spaces where all individuals feel welcome and secure, while addressing inequities rooted in systemic structures like transportation, housing, and public space allocation.
Although the Gender Equality Act (2020) mandates government agencies to conduct gender impact assessments, LatStudios believes private organisations also play a vital role. Inspired by the Equality Institute’s toolkit, we’ve adapted it to suit our practice. Our GIA Tool employs an intersectional lens and encourages critical reflection on equity, considering factors like gender, race, ability, and socio-economic status.
LatStudios is committed to fostering collaboration and dismantling barriers through equitable design. We invite others to join us in this vital journey toward inclusive urban environments.
Please get in touch with Amanda or Kate if you would like to learn more about the GIA Tool!
