Threatened Species Bake Off 2024

The Brisbane studio held our first Threatened Species Bake Off morning tea.

The Brisbane office gathered today for our first Threatened Species Bake Off morning tea with the theme “Towards Zero Extinctions”

We were treated to some delicious creations resembling threatened flora, including:

  • Davies’ Waxflower (Phebalium daviesii) – Lemon myrtle biscuits with icing flowers and myrtle leaves by Wendy Davies (using fresh lemon myrtle from Wendy’s garden);
  • Small-flowered Snottygobble (Persoonia micranthera) – Vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting, decorated with pretzels, choc balls, spearmint leaves and yellow-coloured white chocolate by Zara Monteith; and;
  • Macadamia Nut (Macadamia integrifolia) – Banana muffins with white chocolate drip and macadamia nut topper by Sasha Paterson.

The Threatened Species Bake Off focuses on Australian flora and fauna at the greatest risk of extinction, by baking an edible creation that looks like a threatened or endangered plant or animal as a fun way to raise awareness and increase knowledge of their whereabouts, habitat needs or threats in order to aid recovery efforts. National Threatened Species Day is this Saturday 7 September.

For more information on the Bake Off and other threatened species, head over to the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water website.

“First Nations People considered macadamias not a staple fare; they were considered a delicacy and were treasured and collected wherever they were found. They were also traded between tribes and used as special ceremonial gifts at inter-tribal corroborees.”
